Anatomy of a Composition - Our Disposition

Disposition - the way in which something is placed or arranged, especially in relation to other things.

In most instances, when the word “disposition” is used, it is a direct reference to someone’s mood or wellbeing. There’s a trepidation we have when we greet that friend who has been going through a tough time, or that co-worker who’s always on edge. Or, there are the people in our lives who buoy us no matter what.

The other definition relates to an arrangement or placement of things in relation to other objects.  In photography the idea of arrangement is centered around composition. We think of things like foreground, middle ground and background. We’re intent on placing a subject somewhere and leading the viewer to it.  There are often leading lines, and a rule of thirds that support this vision. Sometimes we serendipitously frame within the Golden Ratio. Regardless, we try to build a scene which tells a story to draw the viewer in.  In doing this, when it best comes alive, an emotion is conveyed and the viewer feels moved by this experience.
