While we were looking the other way...

Some pieces are easy, some pieces are difficult, and some are truly unexpected.  This one falls into all three categories.

There is a small bend on the Yampa River one the outskirts of Steamboat Springs, and it serves as loading and unloading point for boating and fishing on the Yampa.  It has a majestic view of Mt. Werner, the principal feature of Steamboat Springs Ski Resort to the east, but its view to the western horizon is blocked off by massive Cottonwood trees.  But, there is a subtle bend, and a breadth to the scene that has always caught my attention.

I have a few compositions to the east, with Werner towering over the the thicket of Willows and scrub, but I don't really have "the" composition that I envision.  So I routinely stop at this spot when I'm in Steamboat and set up the tripod and camera and wait.  On this occasion, as I always do, I looked to the west.  The sky lighting up with golden hues, and silhouetting the trees, and reflecting off of the currents of the Yampa created this beautiful scene.  I've learned to grab the moment while it is there, and turned the camera and repositioned for a lower aspect image.

This has been a well received image and will certainly go in an upcoming art show. Printed on metal, it is a brilliant and vibrant piece in any setting.
