Lost in a Blur

A 16"x48" canvas Aspen panel, in black and white.  This is a moody piece, with a masked, blurred layer that is haunting and serene.  The image was captured in a small grove near one of my favorite sites in Colorado, the town of Alma.  Alma is special to me as it allowed me a place to take my sons to the mountains, and to share nature the way I love it.

Technically this is a challenging piece to create, as it involves multiple processing steps to emulate what is known as "the Orton Effect."  This effect, invented by Micheal Orton, using a film camera, combines on over exposed and correctly exposed image to create an other-worldly, softer image with just enough glow.  The technique tends to be more obvious in brightly colored, contrasty images, but the black and white just seemed to suit the mood.

This is a piece of digital art, it has taken a commitment of time to draft and create, which makes it a unique type of work.  I will have this piece in an upcoming show.
